Background Note

L. Arthur D'Asaro was an American physicist and electronics engineer. D'Asaro was born in Buffalo, New York on January 20, 1927 and spent most of his childhood in Illinois. He became interested in science and technology at a young age. D'Asaro entered Northwestern University in 1944, but interrupted his education after one semester to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. While serving in the military, he completed the Navy's electronics training program. After the war, D'Asaro returned to Northwestern and earned his B.S. in Physics in 1949. He furthered his education by earning his M.S. in Physics from Northwestern in 1950 and his Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1955.

In 1955, D'Asaro accepted a research staff position at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, where he went on to enjoy a distinguished 46 year career. At Bell Laboratories, he became a noted pioneer in the research and development of semiconductor devices and processing. During the mid and late 1950s, under the supervision of future Bell Laboratories president Ian Ross, D'Asaro worked to develop silicon semiconductor devices. While working under Ross, he built a stepping transistor, which is now considered to be a precursor to the integrated circuit. Between 1959 and 1962, D'Asaro worked on tunnel diodes and played an instrumental role in the development of electronics technology employing gallium arsenide. Between 1962 and 1965, he worked on varactor diodes. In this capacity, he invented the first Schottky barrier mixer and the first practical avalanche photodiode.

D'Asaro turned his attention to lasers during the mid 1960s. Over the next several decades, he played an instrumental role in Bell Laboratories' development of early semiconductor laser technology. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he contributed to the development of striped geometry lasers and helped with the discovery of dark line defects in junction lasers. Between the mid 1970s and late 1980s, D'Asaro concentrated his efforts on gallium arsenide field effect transistors (FETs), which led to his contributions in the development of via transistors. Between 1987 and 1995, he worked on massively parallel optical input/output devices for use in central office switching systems. While doing this, he helped develop the first large arrays of field effect transistor-self electrooptic effect devices (FET-SEEDs). During his last years with Bell Laboratories, he contributed to the development of vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs).

Over the course of his career at Bell Laboratories, D'Asaro rose through the ranks of the research staff hierarchy, eventually reaching the rank of Distinguished Technical Staff in 1984. D'Asaro retired from Bell Laboratories in 1996, but continued to serve as a consultant for a number of years. He left Bell Laboratories for good in 2000.

In 2001, D'Asaro accepted a consultant position with Princeton Optronics, Incorporated, a manufacturer of vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) based in Mercerville, New Jersey. At Princeton Optronics, he continued to be a respected pioneer in the development of VCSEL technology. He made a number of technological contributions that improved Princeton Optronics' product line, including in plating for low temperature bonding and developing procedures for spray cleaning wafers and chips. D'Asaro retired from Princeton Optronics in 2008.

A productive inventor, L. Arthur D'Asaro was awarded over twenty patents over the course of his career, including those for a semiconductor pulse translating system (1962) and curved junction laser devices (1971). He was also the author of numerous papers and articles, and was an active number of several professional and scientific organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Physical Society.

L. Arthur D'Asaro passed away on March 6, 2013.

    This series contains files documenting L. Arthur D'Asaro's career with Bell Laboratories. The contents of the Bell Laboratories Files are arranged into the following seven sub-series:

    • Sub-series 1. Subject Files, 1952-2000, undated

      Arranged alphabetically by subject, this sub-series consists of subject files created and maintained by L. Arthur D'Asaro during his career at Bell Laboratories. These files document many of the projects he worked on at Bell Laboratories. They also regard a number other subjects that attracted his attention while working at Bell Laboratories.

      From the Subject Files sub-series, one can learn much about the research and development work conducted by D'Asaro and his colleagues on a number of projects over the course of his career at Bell Laboratories. This sub-series also reveals that D'Asaro actively sought to keep himself up to date with the latest technological developments in electronics engineering.

      The contents of the Subject Files consist mainly of Bell Laboratories technical memorandums, photocopied articles, and article reprints. A variety of other materials, including, but not limited to, correspondence, notes, reports, papers, presentations, magazine articles, printed materials, and two small artifacts (one flip chip and one Smith Line calculator) are also found here. A significant amount of accompanying photographic materials, which consist mainly of photographs, but also include smaller numbers of transparencies, slides, and negatives, are preserved in the Subject Files sub-series as well.

      Arranged alphabetically by title, this sub-series contains the contents of subject binders created by and/or maintained by L. Arthur D'Asaro during his career at Bell Laboratories. A large majority of these files document projects D'Asaro worked on at Bell Laboratories. Of particular interest in this sub-series are the files concerning his work on self electrooptic effect devices. A small number of files concerning equipment and technology used by D'Asaro and his colleagues at Bell Laboratories are also found here.

      From the Subject Binders sub-series, one can learn much about the research and development work conducted by D'Asaro and his colleagues over the course of his career at Bell Laboratories. This sub-series also reveals that D'Asaro actively sought to keep himself up to date with the latest technological developments in electronics engineering.

      The contents of the Subject Binders sub-series consist of a variety of materials. Bell Laboratories technical memorandums, correspondence, reports, notes, presentations, drawing reproductions, and illustrations are found in this sub-series. A significant amount of accompanying photographic materials, which consist mainly of photographs, but also include smaller numbers of transparencies and negatives, are also found here. A couple of small accompanying artifacts, including a plastic robot arm and a slide rule, are preserved in the Subject Binders sub-series as well.

      Arranged alphabetically by author and alphabetically by title, this sub-series consists of twenty Bell Laboratories notebooks. Nineteen of the notebooks were created by L. Arthur D'Asaro and one notebook was created by his Bell Laboratories colleague John C. McNeilly. They mainly document D'Asaro's research and development work on various projects over the course of his career at Bell Laboratories. To lesser extent, some of D'Asaro's other activities at Bell Laboratories are also documented. A very limited amount of information regarding John C. McNeilly's research work and other activities at Bell Laboratories are also recorded here.

      The contents of this sub-series consist of general notebooks and laboratory notebooks. All of the general notebooks are original. All of the laboratory notebooks are photocopies. A small amount of accompanying materials, including notes, graphs, mimeographed documents, correspondence, and a few photographs are found in the Notebooks sub-series as well.

      Arranged alphabetically by subject, this sub-series consists of subject files created and maintained by L. Arthur D'Asaro during his career at Princeton Optronics. These files primarily document projects D'Asaro worked on at Princeton Optronics. They also regard a number subjects that attracted his attention while working at Princeton Optronics.

      From the Subject Files sub-series, one can learn much about the research and development work conducted by D'Asaro and his colleagues on various projects over the course of his career at Princeton Optronics. Of particular interest are the files pertaining to vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers. This sub-series also reveals that D'Asaro actively sought to keep himself up to date with the latest technological developments in electronics engineering and that he was doing so into his eighties.

      The contents of the Subject Files consist mainly of photocopied articles, articles downloaded from web sources, and papers. A significant amount of correspondence, reports, presentations, web page printouts, and Bell Laboratories technical memorandums are also found in this sub-series. A handful of articles and papers preserved here were co-written by D'Asaro and his colleagues at Princeton Optronics. A noticeable number of the articles and papers represented in this sub-series were written by D'Asaro alone.

      The materials preserved in the Articles and Papers sub-series provide written documentation of the research and development work conducted by D'Asaro and his colleagues over the course of his career. This sub-series also provides written documentation of D'Asaro's outreach activities within the electronics engineering community.

      Typewritten and handwritten manuscripts of articles and papers make up a majority of the materials in this sub-series.       The contents of the Miscellaneous sub-series consist of a variety of materials. Correspondence, photocopied articles, self evaluations, and reports make up the largest portion of the sub-series.       The contents of the L. Arthur D'Asaro Printed Materials consist mainly of photocopied articles, article reprints, photocopied papers, and mimeographed papers. A handful of Bell Laboratories memorandums for record are preserved in this sub-series as well.

    Arranged alphabetically by format and title, this series contains L. Arthur D'Asaro's electronic storage materials. Its contents consist of six flash drives, one 3.5 inch floppy disk, and one CD-ROM.

    The flash drives contain electronic documents saved from D'Asaro's computer/computers. They mainly regard his work at Princeton Optronics, but also include a small amount of information regarding his work at Bell Laboratories. Materials saved on the on the flash drives include Pdf documents, Word documents, Outlook e-mails, Powerpoint presentations, Chrome documents, electronic images, and video recordings of the D'Asaro oral history conducted by the Computer History Museum.

    The 3.5 inch floppy disk contains an electronic copy of the document Extraction and Simulation of FET-SEED Devices and Circuits – Version 1.2, which was written by A.Z. Zhang, D.V. Plant, and H.S. Hinton of McGill University.

    The CD-ROM Photonics 2008 contains Pdf documents pertaining to Photonics Media, a developer of light-based technology based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Of particular interest are the images regarding gallium arsenide field effect transistors and self electrooptic effect devices. A few images of D'Asaro's colleagues at Bell Laboratories are also present in this sub-series. A handful of images of D'Asaro himself and an image of his great grandfather Peter Bennage are also preserved here.

      Photographs of various sizes make up the bulk of the materials in this sub-series. A handful of photocopied images are also present in this sub-series. A small amount of accompanying notes are preserved here as well.
