Scope and Content

This collection contains black and white and color print photographs documenting Hershel Herzog's professional activities from 1964 to 1988. There are several photographs of the "Gentamicin Discovery Team" and notably, one photograph of Nobel Laureate Derek H. R. Barton. Several of the photographs document Herzog's trips to China from 1979 to 1988, where he visited several pharmaceutical factories and other attractions.

Background Note

Hershel L. Herzog was a leading pharmaceutical chemist and executive. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1947 and a master's degree (1947) and doctorate (1950) in organic chemistry from the University of Southern California. Herzog worked for 32 years as a pharmaceutical chemist for Schering Corporation (later Schering-Plough), where he retired as Senior Vice President of Drug Development in January 1983. Notably, Herzog was involved with the development of prednisone and prednisolone, anti-inflammatory drugs used in the treatment of many diseases, in the 1950s, and the development of the antibiotic Gentamicin in the early 1960s. He co-authored the book Microbial Transformations of Steroids in 1967, and from 1982 he owned L. & H. Herzog Associates.
