Background Note
The Division of Chemical Marketing and Economics was a division of the American Chemical Society. Its origins date back to the early 1940s, when a group of chemical engineers formed the Technical Service Group of the Chemical Industry. In 1946, members of the Technical Service Group tried to lower membership standards to bring in younger men working in field service and chemical marketing. This move failed, but it prompted interested members to explore the possibility of setting up a parallel group within the ACS. This resulted in 1947 in the formation of the Chemical Marketing Section, which operated within the ACS’ Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry.
In 1950, the Chemical Marketing Section became a subdivision of the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. The subdivision became an independent division in September 1952 and was named the ACS Division of Chemical Marketing and Economics, with Fred A. Soderverg serving as its first chairman. The division is currently named the ACS Division of Business Development and Management.
